There's an interesting argument going around that claims if Edwards had been forced to withdraw before Iowa that Clinton would be the nominee today. Not sure I believe that theory but if it's true it sucks to think that Clinton 's ultimate undoing was the result of TWO different men having extra-marital affairs. Judy Davis said it best in my favorite Woody Allen film, Husbands and Wives: "FUCKING men! Woman gets to be over a certain age and it's a different ballgame! Don't defend your sex! It's true, you're great til you start to show your age then they want a newer model."

Two months earlier, Edwards had vociferously, but falsely, denied a story in the National Enquirer about the alleged affair last October, and few in the mainstream media even reported the denial.
